We’ve mentioned on the show a few times that I’m in the Celebration Choir, performing at the Capitol Theatre’s Community Celebration, to mark the finale of opening week. I’ve been singing since I was just wee, although I haven’t been in a choir since I lived in PEI. It’s very exciting — I mean how many people will be able to say they’ve performed on the stage at the Capitol? It’s an honour, and a challenge! I’ve heard the music we’ll be performing before – Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana – but man is it ever hard to sing!! It’s entirely in Latin, and it’s FAST. Most people will likely recognize the music once they hear it – it’s been in movies and a few commercials. But make sure you come out to the Capitol on September 25th to see it live. It’s going to be epic! (get your tickets now at www.cktickets.com)
The theatre is awesome – I’ve seen Tap Dogs there, and will see Josh Turner there this weekend as well as Bill Cosby and more in the coming months! Ticketing is NOT out of this world when it comes to price, and you don’t have to drive your car to London/Detroit and pay fuel, wear and tear not to mention traffic, border (if going to Detroit) customs do I need to go on?
I know it has upset some people by the amount of money spent there, but it was nothing more than a hole on the inside. The cement the balcony, plumbing, HVAC, bathrooms, tiles, walls, hand made seating ends, wiring, fire system, carpeting, seats, stage, floor, stairwell, emergency exits all had to be reconstructed. There is absolutly no way that could be done for $500,000 as mentioned below. The seating alone likely cost half that then there is labour for everything as well. People don’t work for free. They are lucky to have the volunteers they have to help get this thing off on the right foot!
The theatre is going to succeed, its getting off on the right foot as long as they can keep the bigger acts coming in they will be good to go. They have my support 100%.
Oh, and yes i am one of those who lines up at Timmies and pay it forward and yes, I make less than $25K/yr.
I think the theatre is beautiful, and cannot wait to go! (Just need to win some tickets from the radio station
All kidding aside, I think we should embrace a little culture here in C-K!
I went to the theatre for a function, which is something I said I would never do well the construction went on and on. I will tell you I had a good time but coming from the construction industry I have a hard time figuring out where 20 million dollars went. I have been to a few theatre in my time and most would have been around 500 thousand to complete and the effects during the show may have been a little better. I can say that I give it an honest effort, but will probably not spent my hard earned money in that facility again.
So Mindy,
Are how many tickets did you buy for Carmina Burana?
The point is SPENT.
Regardless of whether you supported the building of the captial theatre it is here and now open for business. SO it will be a further waste of money/time/energy if it isn’t supported by the community.
So you might as well get excited, stretch yourself a bit and take in a show.
I expect those who have money to: line up at the beer store, get their morning timmies, and/or smoke a pack a day, could scrape together enough funds to escape from their situation by purchasing a ticket to a cultural event. (Tim Hortons and The Beer Store seem to make it through economic downturns unscathed)
It all a matter of perspective. I personally think that culture should be supported. (listen up incumbents!)
I couldn’t agree more Phil! Millions upon millions of dollars spent on a white elephant! Money down the drain!!!
I’m sure there will be people here that will enjoy this type of thing but do we have the population base to draw from?
With double-digit unemployment, shouldn’t we focus on job creation, retention and social concerns instead of frivolous projects like the Capitol?
If people don’t have income…how do you expect them to buy concert tickets?
You’re entitled to your opinion, of course. But what, exactly, is a “Chatham-Kent” type thing? It may not be your thing, but that doesn’t mean there are many other people who’ve been waiting for something like this to happen in CK. Why should we have to travel to London, Windsor, Detroit or Toronto when we can have it here at home?
Not to put you or this production down…but will this be well attended?
This is not a “Chatham-Kent” type thing and that’s why I’m afraid that the Theatre is going to be a total flop. I can’t believe this is where my tax dollars are going…wait a minute…yes I can.
